Sqlélten exhibition at Salmon Arm Art Gallery

August 27, 2022 @ 11:00 am - 4:00 pm

Salmon Arm Art Gallery is pleased to present Sqlélten, an exhibition exploring the role of salmon in Indigenous culture, story and food systems. In this peak year of the Adams River Sockeye Salmon Run, the Art Gallery wishes to focus on the land-based knowledge of the Secwepemc people, and is grateful for the generous participation of Co-Curator Tania Willard to bring together a diverse selection of contemporary and traditional works by Indigenous artists. The exhibition opens on Saturday, August 27 and continues to October 8, 2022.

As both Co-Curator and exhibiting artist, Tania Willard brings an extensive knowledge to this topic. Willard leads an Indigenous Arts Intensive at UBC-O each year, and has brought the work of Csetkwe Fortier into this visual dialogue. Also featuring works by Aaron Leon, Isha Jules, Hop You Haskett, Kenthen Thomas, Gerry Thomas, Louis Thomas, and the students of Chief Atahm School, this exhibition weaves a 15,000 year history with contemporary art-making and story-telling.

The opening day celebration on Saturday, August 27 starts with a traditional welcome at 11:30am with Neskonlith Councillor Louis Thomas. The Coffee Break and Artist Talk is on Thursday, September 15 at 2pm, with words from the Co-Curator and exhibiting artists along with locally roasted organic coffee and fresh baked cookies. This exhibition is sponsored by Team Linda Rohlfs of Re/Max. Art Gallery hours are Tuesday to Saturday 11am to 4pm, and admission is by donation.
