Victoria-based composers Nathan Friedman, Lynne Penhale, and Maria Eduarda Mendes Martins, venture into the BC Interior performing their own original music as well as pieces written by other BC composers including Jean Ethridge (Salmon Arm) and Sylvia Rickard (Victoria). Their ensemble of voice, piano, and clarinet is joined by Bailey Finley on flute, bringing contemporary classical music from Victoria into the Thompson, Okanagan, and Shuswap regions.

About Victoria Composers Collective:

Founded in 2014, the Victoria Composers Collective is a Victoria-based community of emerging composers dedicated to the performance and promotion of new music from the local community and across Canada

Originally hailing from Quesnel, Lynne Penhale is a composer based in Victoria. She began her career as a songwriter and then pursued a composition degree at the University of Victoria. In her spare time she likes to knit and hang out with her orange and white cat, Carlton.

Maria Eduarda Martins is a composer, music director, and concert organizer living in Victoria. After initiating her piano studies in 2006, Maria completed a bachelor’s degree in music composition at Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Subsequently, Maria moved to Canada in 2013 to pursue a master’s degree in music composition from University of Victoria. Outside of composing, Maria enjoys writing stories and watching movies.

Originally from Kamloops, Nathan Friedman is a composer and clarinetist based in Victoria. He has an MA in Composition/Experimental Music from Wesleyan University in Connecticut and a Bachelor of Music in composition from the University of Victoria. When he’s not busy composing, Nathan enjoys reading strange books and looking at maps.

Bailey Finley is a diverse flautist who avidly promotes new music. Originally from Kamloops, she left to pursue music on the West Coast. In spring 2017, Bailey received her Bachelor of Musical Arts, Comprehensive from the University of Victoria. Bailey is a self-proclaimed taco connoisseur and is a co-founder of Trio Taco, a contemporary flute trio based in Victoria.
