CSRD Parks & Recreation

Parks & Recreation

Program Information

The Columbia Shuswap Regional District is home to some of the most spectacular scenery in the world.  With incredible mountain views, a multitude of lakes and rivers, waterfalls, and enchanting forests just minutes away from most communities, it is easy to see why the vision of a system of parks and trails connecting them is catching on in the CSRD.

Each of the six Electoral Areas of the Regional District has a Community Parks function.  The budget for each of these areas varies, depending upon the level of tax requisition approved by the CSRD Board.  Currently, Electoral Areas A, C, D, E and F have completed Parks Plans, which provide strategic direction for the acquisition and development of parks and trails over a 20 year planning horizon. The final Parks Plan (Electoral Area B) is currently underway.  The Areas which currently have a Parks Plan also have an active Community Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission, along with a Park Development and Maintenance program.

Community parks are acquired through land development as a requirement of subdivision, or through purchases, donations, or transfer/lease/license of occupation of crown land from the Province.  Popular community parks include Sorrento Blind Bay Park in Sorrento and Rose Clifford Park in Scotch Creek.

The Parks and Recreation Department is responsible for the planning, management and operation of community parks within the Regional District.  Overall, there are nearly 200 sites that have been identified as candidate parks or trails.  The CSRD currently has approximately 30 parks and trails formally established and operating, since the program was established in 2004.
