Shuswap Secrets: Grape Expectations Uncorked
Wine and beer enthusiasts, welcome to paradise! The Shuswap’s award-winning wineries and unique breweries invite you to indulge in exceptional tasting experiences.
Like so many Shuswap stories, our wines and beers express the spectacular landscape that surrounds us. Although the Shuswap can be considered the northern tip of the Okanagan wine- growing region, our climate is cooler than the southern interior regions of BCand creates exceptional products. Each vineyard enjoys a unique microclimate, producing singular flavours that only develop right here.
With wineries of outstanding quality established throughout the Shuswap, a tasting tour is a must for visitors seeking to delight all five senses! The Shuswap’s wineries are family run businesses that produce wines so fine they compete on par with international wines. They’ve created magnificent Gewürztraminers, Merlots, Ortegas, Rieslings, Siegerrebes, to name a few, which have all won national awards. To find out which wineries are open during your tour, visit ShuswapWineries.ca, or grab a copy of our Tastes of the Shuswap brochureavailable Spring 2017. The Shuswap region is also home to breweries that pride themselves on using only the finest local and organic ingredients to produce their beers and ales. Crannóg Ales in Sorrento is Canada’s first Certified Organic farmhouse microbrewery, one of only a handful around the world. Stop in on a Friday or Saturday over the summer for a tour and tasting. Visit the Barley Station Brew Pub in Salmon Arm any day of the week for a sampler of their seasonal and limited-edition blends – and excellent dining, too!
Whether you choose to savour the Shuswap’s wineries and breweries in a day or a week, make sure to plan your tour carefully to maximize your enjoyment. Some wineries have a picnic area or patio, so that you can bring a snack or a meal to enjoy along with the fabulous wine and stunning scenery. For a complementary experience, visit farms while you make your way around the region, and try creating your own pairings of local food and wine. And remember, a Shuswap winery tour can easily be paired with a visit to wineries in neighbouring regions. You’ll discover that fine wine transcends all boundaries!
Keep in mind that some of the Shuswap’s unique wines are produced only in limited quantities and may not be available elsewhere, so if you find yourself swept away by a particular flavour, stock up while you’re here. And to keep your tour worryfree, appoint a designated driver for the trip. You’ll be glad you did!
